Senior Ladies Matches 2025

The matches have been very well supported this season and thoroughly enjoyed by all those taking

part. At the end of last season, due to no one taking up the Senior Ladies Captain position, a new

organisational format was devised. Once everyone was used to the idea, it proved a workable

solution. A huge thankyou to the ladies who came forward to be “Match Captains” on the day, you

have all done a fabulous job and ensured these popular matches will continue.

Going forward there will be a Senior Team Manager to coordinate an “on the day Captain” for each

match.

The last two matches took place on 7th and 10th July. Both resulted in wins for WHLCGA,

congratulations ladies!

The last friendly match in our diary was 4th August at Ludlow vs Shropshire. Unfortunately, due to a

communication error regarding the date, this match has had to be cancelled; sincere apologies to all

the ladies who said they were available.

This season has been a huge learning curve for several of us! Thank you for your patience and

invaluable support; apologies for errors made, it was completely new territory for me in particular.

But, between us all, we have ensured the Seniors matches will continue to be enjoyed.

Jenny Hartley

10th July 2025

Senior Ladies Betterball Scratch Match

WHLCGA 1st Team vs Warkwickshire 1st Team

This fixture was the second match of the Tri – counties competition for the Glass Lady. Staffordshire

had already won the overall match, but we were playing Warwickshire for the runner-up position.

The match was held at The Worcestershire on a wonderful scorching summers day. Gallons of water

were consumed, and sunscreen was a must! The fairways were super-fast, creating extra distance for

us all, and the approach to the greens was lush and grassy, despite the baking hot weather. Thank you

to the greenkeeping staff for providing a great course to play.

It was a very competitive match and played in good spirit resulting in a win for WHLCGA, 5 ½ to 2 ½.

WHLCGA Team:

Di Meakin & Wendy Bill

Cath Francis & Biddy Denton

Denise Codrington & Sally Smith

Wendy Rabbit & Dawn Stanhope

Jackie Marks & Julie Baker

Sarah Pool & Lynn Wilson

Linda Whitehead & Claire Painter

Ali Tuck & Rosie Jenkins

Thank you to all the ladies who made the journey from further afield and to those who stepped in last

minute to create a victorious team.

Denise and Ali ( team captains for the match!)

15th July 2025

A mixed match took place at Mile End Golf Club, Oswestry, organised by the Senior men. This was not

in our diary at the beginning of the season, but we have learnt that it is an annual event. It is a Tri

Counties match with 6 ladies and 6 gents from each of three counties, Hereford, Shropshire, and

Worcestershire. Thank you to our team of 6 ladies, Sue Yau, Dee Barker, Barbara Hedges, Shannon

Jeffries, Susan Griffiths, Suzanne Graty for playing at short notice. And thank you to Stef Kotlarzewski,

Senior Men’s Captain, for organising the Worcestershire team. Hereford won the trophy which, we

understand, is also an annual event

REPORT ON THE MOST RECENT SENIOR MATCHES

CONGRATULATIONS & THANKS TO ALL WHO PLAYED & SUPPORTED THEIR COUNTY

June has been a busy month for the County. As well as County Match Week, three Senior Ladies matches have taken place.

On June 4th the 2nd team played Warwickshire at The Vale, Evesham. This was the second of our Tri-matches for the Morgan Trophy.  Before play commenced, Jenny Hartley, Match Captain on the day, learnt that Staffordshire had won their match vs Warwickshire, thus giving them two out of 3 wins for the Morgan Trophy.

Each county had a last-minute cancellation so could only field 15 players. Maggie Thomson, in her first seniors county match, played singles vs the Warks Captain, Lesley James. Maggie was unfazed and thoroughly enjoyed her game which resulted in a draw.

The matches were close and played in excellent spirit. The day ended with a friendly draw!

It was the first time playing for County for more than half the team, they all enjoyed the day and would love to play for county again!

The Vale’s hospitality and welcome was as good as ever, thank you to all the staff.

On June 9th the 3rd team played a friendly match vs Staffordshire. This match has not been played for the last two years due to a lack of interest, but we were delighted to be able to field 12 players, with Staffs doing the same. Handicap range was 22.5 and above.

The County wishes to thank Sharon Easton Pollock, Bromsgrove GC, for offering to be Match Captain on the day, Sharon has never been involved in County matches before, so it was quite an undertaking, she did an excellent job and has reported the following:

“Fabulous day had by the ladies, majority have not played for County before so a new experience for us all. The hosts were Staffordshire County with the venue at Stafford Castle Golf Course; it was well organised and a very friendly group of ladies. The food was delicious, and the weather held out for the majority of the time. The course had very challenging greens with interesting pin positions, one of our teams lost on the last putt of their match. General feedback from our ladies is they thoroughly enjoyed the day and would be interested in playing for County again. Result was Staffs won 4&2.”

On June 10th a Scratch Friendly was played at Hollywood vs Gloucestershire. Only 7 players were required as Gloucestershire wished to play County Match Week (CMW) format in preparation for a possible Senior Ladies CMW being held in the future. The format for this was two foursomes matches and three singles.

Lynn Wilson, Fulford Heath GC, agreed to be Match Captain on the day. After a lot of arm bending, Lynn managed to persuade 7 ladies to play! They all played extremely well, resulting in a win for Worcestershire and Herefordshire of 3.5 to 1.5. The ladies were not keen on playing foursomes but comfortably won both their matches.

Lynn was surprised when she discovered how many single-figure players were in the Gloucestershire team!

Exceptionally well played ladies and thank you Lynn for stepping out of your comfort zone to be Match Captain, great job!

Sarah Cranton

Midland South Senior Women's Golf Champion

The Senior County Ladies had a busy day on Monday 8th May 2025, with 2 matches taking place on the same day.

Senior Ladies 1st Team Match-

Betterball Scratch Match.

The first team were away to Staffordshire Seniors 1st Team, at Little Aston, in the Tri-counties competition for the ‘Glass Lady. ‘

This is a 3- way competition between Staffordshire, Worcestershire & Herefordshire & Warwickshire. Although the result does not reflect the standard of the golf played, W & H lost 5 ½ to 2 ½.

We would like to field full sides for all matches, sadly Janice Kerr (Captain for the fixture) was 3 players short for the 1st team, (maximum handicap limit 13.4) this dilutes the occasion somewhat.

Thank you to all who played, an excellent day of competition & special thanks to Yem Pham who took on her opponents single handedly!

Senior Ladies 2nd Team Match  -

Played at Handsworth G C, for the Tri-counties Morgan Trophy (Betterball Handicap Match)

We fielded a full team of 16 players ranging in handicap from 14.4 to 23.4(22.5 limit)

The course was in immaculate condition and everyone enjoyed playing in sunshine, although there was a threat of thunder late afternoon.
We had some very good results in the first five matches but Staffs displayed strength in the final matches.

Match result: Staffs won 5-3
Hospitality was good and an excellent meal.
Thanks to all the players who appeared to enjoy their matches.

Netty Kitson
Acting Match Captain
